Flies, Gnats and Mosquitos
The order Diptera which includes all true flies, gnats and mosquitos. Common species such as houseflies, blowflies, midges, sand-flies and mosquitos are included in this group. Diptera is derived from the Greek word Di meaning two as the members of this order only have one pair of functioning wings which is probably their most identifiable feature. Their wing arrangement gives them great aerial manoeuvrability and the claws and pads on their feet enable them to cling to very smooth surfaces. They generally have large compound eyes and piercing and sucking mouth parts.
